Some areas of Campania are known above all for their production of excellent wines. However, in the province of Benevento there's also an age-old tradition of making ceramics. For hundreds of years the kilns of the typical artisan workshops in San Lorenzello and Cerreto Sannita have been producing exquisite artistic pieces. Acknowledged by the relevant ministry as "artistic and traditional”, ceramics from San Lorenzello and Cerreto Sannita developed in their own specific way after the earthquake in 1688. The period of reconstruction involved important Neapolitan artists, who created a more joyful and elaborate style of ceramics, verging on the Baroque.
