1Introduction
I have been manufacturing pottery crafts, mainly terracotta statues, for over twenty years in my workshop located in the historic centre of Sorrento.
My production mainly focuses on sacred art, through the manufacture of cribs and scenes taken from the Old and the New Testament, without neglecting traditions and rituals of my Land, including the Holy Week processions. I also include that land in my cribs, with the reproduction of old tufa country house, Villa Pollio Felice ruins, vegetation, and costumes.
For a number of years, I’ve been also focusing on the Cross, to describe the story of Safety through the most meaningful scenes. Two of these works, Christus Vincit and Vita Semper Vincit, 140 cm high, are permanently displayed in Sorrento Cathedral of Saints Philippe and James and in the Carpi (in the province of Modena) Cathedral.
I offered Lux Familiae, a one-meter-high candle holder, to Pope Francis in 2015 during the last Synod of the Family, and later on it was exhibited in Carpi Cathedral, in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, at the Università Cattolica in Milan, and at Palazzo Grimaldi della Meridiana, in Genoa. A Via Crucis is on display at Scuola grande of San Teodoro in Venice.
The technique is similar to that used in the past by Real Fabrica di Capodimonte, but using clay instead of porcelain. The single piece of clay, made by increasing its volume, where I place completely hand-shaped figurines with a size between 1 and 14 cm, is baked at 960°. Once cooked, crafts are mounted on frames or wooden bases, made in the Sorrento style, and covered with glass cases.
